A PLANNING application for restoration and alterations to one of the town's oldest homes will be decided on by Maldon District Council's Central Area Committee, it was confirmed today (Wednesday, 30 June).

Until today, the application to renovate and alter the Grade II* listed house formerly known as 'Chandlers' at 4, Silver Street, had been earmarked for a delegated decision by council officers. However, today was the 'target' date for a decision and it now seems that the application has been 'called in' to planning committee for a debate and vote by councillors instead.

The name of the house has been changed to 'Josua' in the application documents, named after the first owner identified by historical research. It is thought Josua lived in the house in the Fifteenth Century.

New owner Neil Bresler has been working alongside MDC's Conservation Officer, in uncovering the history of the house over the past year.

The Conservation Officer and The Maldon Society have supported the application, but there have also been objections from some residents - and Maldon Town Council voted to recommend refusal of the plans earlier this month because of what town councillors considered a lack of information at the time.

The next Central Area Planning Committee is scheduled for 28 July and it is thought the application may be heard then.
