Police probe assault on naked rider - watch video
By SWNS 20th Jul 2026
A NATURIST was kicked by two young men on an e-scooter while taking part in in a nude charity cycle, prompting a police investigation.
The man, who wants to be identified as Mo, said he was left with red bruises after the assault took place on June 20 in Chelmsford.
It comes less than a year after leading naturist Robert Brown made headlines after he was punched off his bike by a binman who was handed a suspended sentence.
Video shows the moment the two men ride past Mo before coming back and kicking him on the thigh - before narrowing avoiding an oncoming bus.
Mo had been cycling as part of the Four Seasons World Naked Bike Ride event - a protest against the 'destructive elements' of car culture and a celebration of the bicycle and body.
Essex Police say investigations are ongoing but there have been no arrests.
Mo said: "I was riding at the back of the group when it happened.
"Two guys on an electric scooter came up from behind, said something, passed me, then made a U-turn and came towards me, and the one on the back kicked me as they passed by.
"His foot hit the lower part of my thigh first, then slid all the way up to my stomach.
"Fortunately, because the impact was distributed across this wide area, the force was absorbed, preventing a severe injury.
"The attack left some red bruises on both the lower and upper parts of my thigh.
"I will not let violence like this stop me from participating in the protest."
Naturism is defined by British Naturism as a 'philosophical belief in a natural, naked lifestyle wherein persons espouse nudity as part or possibly all of their lifestyle'.
The College of Policing say naturists have a right to freedom of expression and it is only a criminal offence if they commit a sexual offence or engage in behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
The common law offence of outraging public decency applies when a person's behaviour is lewd, obscene or disgusting as to shock.
It also states that 'a naturist whose intention is limited to going about their lawful business while naked will not be guilty of sexual offences'.
A survey commissioned by British Naturism in 2022 found there are an estimated 6.7 million naturists in the UK.
Robert Brown was cycling through Colchester, Essex, during a Four Seasons World Naked Bike Ride event on August 9, 2025 when he was assaulted.
The group hold rides across the globe and Mr Brown, the leader for the Clacton division, said he was "not a pervert" following the attack.
Binman Lee Turnage, 46, was handed a suspended prison sentence at Ipswich Crown Court for causing actual bodily harm for the incident.
Speaking about Mo's assault, Mr Brown said: "I'm absolutely disgusted that people think they've got the right to attack someone who is doing something lawful.
"These attacks are happening more and more. We know what the law is.
"Indecent exposure does not relate to simple nudity."
An Essex Police spokesperson said: "We're investigating an incident in Chelmsford in which a man reported being assaulted in Duke Street between 4pm and 4.20pm on 20 June.
"At this stage, no arrests have been made and our work is ongoing."
