ESSEX Police have highlighted a near ten per cent drop in car thefts across the county.

The force says it is thanks to a combination of partnership working, technology, intelligence and dedicated investigative work, adding: "Officers have successfully solved more cases than ever, returning stolen vehicles to their rightful owners and bringing offenders to justice.

"Figures show vehicle thefts continue to fall, with 573 fewer offences in the last 12 months to the end of May, a reduction of almost 10%.

"Of particular note, the rate at which we're solving vehicle thefts continues to increase and we've solved 126% more offences in the same period - a figure that underscores the force's commitment to protecting the public and their property.

"And theft from a vehicle is also down 1,572 offences, a 26% reduction."

Detective Superintendent Shaun Kane who leads the force team says: "This achievement reflects the tireless efforts of all our officers and the strength of our working partnerships with the community who tell us what they know, businesses who help make cars less vulnerable to theft and our work with other agencies and forces when crimes go beyond Essex.

"Vehicle theft is not a victimless crime – it causes real distress to owners and disruption to their everyday lives and their businesses.

"We're proud to have made such significant progress in reducing this type of crime, and it will be welcomed by everyone in Essex.

The senior officer attributes the force's overall success to several key initiatives, including:

• Enhanced use of intelligence and technology

• Increased patrols in hotspot areas

• Cross-force collaboration to help track and intercept stolen vehicles

• Public awareness campaigns encouraging vehicle security and vigilance
