Maldon District Council met with residents and business owners at the Little Ship Club last week, to discuss proposals to "regenerate" the town's historic Hythe Quay.

Plans show a cobbled road surface and canopy shelters along the iconic waterfront. A new maritime building is proposed, which will overlook the River Bailiff's hut.

"There were a number of comments made, both positive and negative, by those who attended about the proposed plans," a Maldon District Council spokesperson told Nub News.

"These are not the final designs and would be subject to change through the normal planning consultation process and further discussions will be held with the Hythe Quay community."

The 'Maldon Historic Waterfront Revival Programme' was proposed as part of a failed £2.2 million investment bid in August last year. The council also submitted a £1 million investment plan for the government-allocated UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

"This project was originally submitted as part of Round Two of the Government's Levelling Up Fund but was unsuccessful," the council spokesperson added.

"However, following feedback from the Department for Levelling Up, Homes and Communities the Council is now considering submitting a planning application to strengthen its chances for future grant funding."

It is anticipated that Round Three of the Levelling Up Fund may open for applications or be awarded via an allocation, prior to the Chancellor's Autumn Statement on November 22.
