Stow Maries Aerodrome Trustees vote on future as financial concerns grow
The Board of Trustees at the Stow Maries Aerodrome have been forced to vote on the future of the aviation museum after growing financial concerns.
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is a WW1 military aviation museum based in Maldon.
The largest surviving Great War aerodrome in Europe, the aerodrome remains unchanged from its original WW1 use, and is home to a growing collection of artefacts and memorabilia.
But now, after growing concerns about rising costs and "lower-than-usual" visitor numbers, the charity has had to make decisions about the future of the aerodrome.
In a vote to discuss the future of the museum, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to remain open, committing to "battle on and save the site".
The charity relies almost exclusively on visitors to cover the cost of operating, something which has seen a decline due to closures on their main access road.
Chair of Trustees, Martyn Gill said: "We have received excellent advice from the Heritage Lottery Fund's business consultant, as well as examined every possible expense we face.
"Following hours of work by the leadership team, the Board were able to face some very difficult decisions with clarity and understanding.
"I am very happy indeed that the museum will remain open for the remainder of 2024, as well as reopening in Spring 2025.
"We have a great deal of work to do to get us out of the woods, but if we get the support we need, we believe it is achievable."
