The entire T-section of the pontoon in Burnham needs replacement after suffering "considerable damage" from heavy winds caused by Storm Eunice, it has been revealed.

The end of the T-section came away as winds of up to 90mph battered the Essex coastline when Storm Eunice hit on 18 February, placing the Maldon district under a rare red weather warning, while the entire length of the pontoon began to lift away.

Maldon District Council has now confirmed it will need to replace the T-section of the popular attraction, while officers are putting together a report on the extent of the repairs needed.

A spokesperson for the district council said: "On 1 March, council officers met with the manufacturer of the pontoon and a full engineers' report is being produced on the repairs required and to outline the options for the future.

"The T-section that was badly damaged in the recent storms is beyond repair and will need to be replaced by the council.

"In the meantime, we urge people not to attempt to visit the pontoon area, it remains closed whilst it is unsafe for public access."
