SATURDAY: Join the lord lieutenant at the launch of Essex's first Heritage Harbour

Residents are being invited to explore Maldon's maritime history this Saturday (5 March), at the launch of the Maldon and Heybridge Harbour Association.

Jennifer Tolhurst, the lord lieutenant of Essex, will join attendees to unveil the new plaque at Cooks Yard - a historic shipyard on the River Blackwater specialising in the building of Thames sailing barges, which operated from the 1890s to the 1980s before being taken over by Topsail Charters in 1999.

Maldon and Heybridge has been designated as the first Heritage Harbour in Essex to recognise this history - as part of a joint initiative by the Maritime Heritage Trust and National Historic Ships.

The Maldon and Heybridge Harbour Association says it aims to "preserve and secure a future for Maldon's maritime heritage", and members will be discussing what they are hoping to achieve at the launch this weekend.

Head to Cooks Yard on the Hythe in Maldon at 11.30am for the unveiling.

SATURDAY: Look for wildlife in Tollesbury Wick

The Havering group at Essex Wildlife Trust will be holding a wildlife walk this Saturday (5 March) in Tollesbury Wick.

Join members for your chance to see winter wildfowl and waders while enjoying beautiful views of the nature reserve.

The walk will begin at 10.30am and end at 12.30pm.

It is free to join, and you can register by calling 07413 649006 or emailing [email protected].

Attendees will meet at Tollesbury Wick Nature Reserve's car park on Woodrolfe Road in Tollesbury.
