“There must be a lot of people trying to commit electoral suicide”: Tillingham Tory councillor backs Boris hours before no confidence vote

Councillor Richard Dewick, representing Tillingham on Maldon District Council, has said he maintains 'full confidence' in Boris Johnson, just hours before MPs are set to decide the Prime Minister's fate.
Councillor Dewick said: "Boris Johnson may have made some mistakes, but he's done what he said he would do. He got Brexit done, and he's managed to do one of the best jobs getting people vaccinated against COVID, probably in the whole world.
"How many of us actually got through the COVID thing without breaking any of the rules?"
"It didn't look like a party I would particularly want to attend; it looked a bit boring.
"I think the timing is very bad. We've got the makings of a major war in Europe going on.
"He's admitted he's made mistakes. Let's get over it, move on and cope with the more important things we've got to deal with at the minute.
Two fellow local Conservative councillors have turned down the opportunity to publicly back the Prime Minister, while three more have been approached but were unavailable for comment.
Meanwhile, Maldon's Conservative MP John Whittingdale also remains unavailable for comment, despite being approached several times.
Mr Whittingdale was removed as Media Minister by Mr Johnson following a Cabinet reshuffle last September.
During the Heybridge West Ward by-election last April, Mr Whittingdale admitted concern over the impact of Boris Johnson's fine from the Metropolitan Police.
He said: "To have this election take place so soon after the controversy surrounding fixed penalty notices is not ideal for the Conservatives.
"I hope people can focus more on the local issues rather than national ones."
The vote of no confidence was triggered this morning (June 6), when 54 Conservative MPs submitted letters to the Party's 1922 Committee, triggering a secret ballot to determine whether Boris Johnson will remain Prime Minister.
It is due to take place between 6pm and 8pm this evening.
