‘Unemployment in Maldon 40 per cent below national average’, says Sir John Whittingdale MP
Unemployment in the Maldon constituency was well below the national average last month, according to figures from the House of Commons Library.
The number of claimants of unemployment-related benefits in the constituency in July was 1,160 or 2.1 per cent, compared to 3.7 per cent across the UK.
Sir John Whittingdale, MP for Maldon, said: "The latest figures show there are almost four million more people in work since 2010 and that wages are now rising at their fastest rate ever.
"Locally, the rate of unemployment is 40 per cent below the national figure. While many people are finding it hard to afford the cost of living, the best security comes from a well-paid job and it is very encouraging that the number in work remains so high."
Nationally, unemployment has risen to 4.2 per cent for those aged 16 and over, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Darren Morgan, Director of Economic Statistics at the ONS, said: "The number of unemployed people has risen again while the number of people working has fallen back a little.
"This is mainly due to people taking slightly longer to find work than those who started job hunting in recent months."
The latest House of Commons Library UK Labour Market Statistics also show there was a fall in real-terms growth for earnings, continuing the trend seen throughout much of 2022 and 2023.
"High inflation since 2021 has meant despite growth in nominal wages, real wages have been falling, and are expected to continue to fall in 2023," the said.
"Average wages fell in real terms in the three months to June 2023, with an annual change of -0.6 per cent, excluding bonuses."
Meanwhile, the same period saw the highest annual increase in nominal pay, which is not adjusted for inflation, since comparable records began in 2001.
