Visitors enjoy faithful re-creation of Stow Maries at war at Aerodrome event

Visitors to Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome enjoyed a window into the past at the weekend, with a Royal Flying Corps Living History Event that faithfully recreated a snapshot of the military activities that took place on site in May 1916.
Three groups of living historians took part in the weekend's events, remaining in character while visitors had a chance to ask them questions and find out about their lives during World War One. The Lufbery Royal Flying Corps Living History Group represented Royal Flying Corps pilots and crew (predecessors of the RAF), the Past History group's Neil Bond appeared as a British Army Chaplain, including taking a Sunday morning chapel service in the Museum's Mortuary Building, and members of 399 Detachment, RND formed a training camp of replacements for the Royal Naval Division preparing to head to war.
In addition, visitors were thrilled to see some of the aircraft from the WWI Aviation Heritage Trust out on the grass undergoing engine testing and final flight checks in readiness for summer air events at the Museum, giving a rare opportunity to hear the roar of these classic engines.

Ian Flint, Chief Executive Officer of Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, commented: "We enjoyed a busy weekend, with the Royal Flying Corps Living History Event helping visitors to understand the importance of our Museum during the Great War. Not only did the aerodrome play a vital role in Britain's air defences, but it was also a training camp for personnel heading to the Front.
"It was fantastic to see so many living historians faithfully re-creating these roles – and a bonus to witness aircraft getting ready for our upcoming flying events, Wings & Wheels on Sunday May 25 and the Stow Maries Air Show on Saturday August 23."

All proceeds from opening to the public and all events directly fund the ongoing work to preserve and protect Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome and support its battle for survival.
