Maldon Film Club's successful 18th season continued this month, with screenings of the Oscar-winning West Side Story and Quo Vadis, Aida?

More than 80 members attended each film, both of which received approval ratings of over 80 per cent.

The season continues in November with the screening of three films:

November 1: Babyteeth (BAFTA-nominated)

When seriously ill teenager Milla falls madly in love with small-time drug dealer Moses, it's her parents' worst nightmare. But as Milla's first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window. Milla soon shows everyone in her orbit, including her parents, how to live like you have nothing to lose. What might have been a disaster for the Finlay family instead leads to letting go and finding grace in the glorious chaos of life. Babyteeth joyously explores how good it is not to be dead yet and how far we will go for love

November 15: Compartment No. 6

A young Finnish woman escapes an enigmatic love affair in Moscow by boarding a train to the arctic port of Murmansk. Forced to share the long ride and a tiny sleeping car with a Russian miner, the unexpected encounter leads the occupants of Compartment no. 6 to face the truth about their own yearning for human connection.

November 29: Ammonite (BAFTA-nominated)

In 1840s England, acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) works alone on the rugged Southern coastline. With the days of her famed discoveries behind her, she now searches for common fossils to sell to tourists to support herself and her ailing mother. When a wealthy visitor entrusts Mary with the care of his wife Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), she cannot afford to turn his offer down. Proud and relentlessly passionate about her work, Mary initially clashes with her unwelcome guest, but despite the distance between their social class and personalities, an intense bond begins to develop, between the two women.

This season's programme continues until 24 May 2023, offering 15 more films to enjoy.
