What to watch in October as Maldon Film Club's 19th season gets underway
Maldon Film Club opened its doors once again on September 12, welcoming a new season with the screening of the highly-acclaimed Mrs Harris Goes to Paris.
Last Tuesday, that was followed by the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once. The season continues on October 10 and 24, with the films Broker and the Oscar-winning Tar set to be shown.
The first film for October follows two brokers who sell orphaned infants, circumventing the bureaucracy of legal adoption. After a young mother decides to give up her newborn child to a church for adoption, she not only discovers this group exists but ends up joining them in an exciting road trip to find customers ready to buy the child. However, things don't go smoothly as they had hoped.
Maldon Film Club's second October offering is the Oscar-nominated movie Tar. Having achieved an enviable career few could even dream of, renowned conductor/composer Lydia Tár, the first female principal music director of the Berlin Philharmonic, is at the top of her game. As a conductor, Lydia not only orchestrates - she manipulates. As a trailblazer, the passionate virtuoso leads the way in the male-dominated classical music industry. Lydia prepares for the release of her memoirs while juggling work and family. She is also willing to take up one of her most significant challenges: a live recording of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5. However, forces that even the imperious maestro can't control slowly chip away at Lydia's elaborate façade, revealing the genius's dirty secrets and the insidious, corrosive nature of power. Will life eventually knock Lydia off her pedestal?
The programme for the 2023/24 season, which covers a wide variety of themes with films from different regions of the world, continues until 22 May 2024. Films will be shown fortnightly on Tuesdays in 2023 and Wednesdays in 2024.
An annual subscription for the club costs £30, which entitles members to free admission to all films, at less than £1.60 per film. In addition, there are a limited number of places for junior members aged 16-18 in full time education and training at the reduced price of £20. Members' guests may attend a film evening for just £4 per person per film.
Membership is open to all and new members will be made very welcome. There are still 17 films left to watch this season.
For further details and a membership form, check out the Maldon Film Club website, visit the Maldon Visitor Information Centre (open 11am until 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday) or contact John Salisbury on 07905 971 608.
