Heritage Open Day at Friary Walled Garden, Maldon: Sunday 18 September, from 10am until 4pm
Maldon's secret garden is open on Heritage Open Day for you to enjoy the peace and quiet. The unexpected green oasis covering just one fifth of an acre hides behind ancient red brick walls, with its entrance next to the to town library. Guided tours are available throughout the day.
- Through the wooden entrance door you will find a lovingly restored garden with narrow footpaths and box hedges.
- It is believed possible that the site was cultivated as far back as the thirteenth century when it was occupied by a Carmelite monastery.
- Many of the plants found there today can be attributed more to the gardeners of the nineteenth century; growing fruit, vegetables and medicinal herbs.
- The present garden, cared for by the Maldon & Heybridge Horticultural Society, has a formal Georgian layout overlaid by a wild cottage type garden.
- It's a delightful little refuge from the hurly burly activities of the town centre - and you can buy plants for sale to take a little bit of the magic home with you!
