Local young musicians celebrated at Southminster Festival of Music

The new Southminster Competitive Festival of Music aimed to celebrate young musicians from across the Maldon district and Dengie Peninsula.
The festival was held this weekend (April 26) at St Leonard's Church, Southminster.
Sir John Whittingdale was Guest of Honour and presented the prize to the winner of the "Young Musician 11 years and under" section at the Southminster Competitive Festival of Music.
The winner of the award was All Saints Primark School pupil Elowen Fuller, who played two pieces on the violin.
Cllr Meinir Wyn Davies, who inspired and organised the festival, said he hoped the festival would "encourage young people to come and perform to one a other and gain experience from making music."
Sir John Whittingdale added: "This Festival is a fantastic initiative and I warmly commend Southminster Parish Council for organising it.
"I was very impressed by the high standard, with music ranging from Metallica and Iron Maiden to Greig and Saint- Saens.
"I congratulate all those who participated."
There were three competitions, including Junior Choir 11 years and under, Young Musician 12 to 18 years, and Young Musician 11 years and under.
Winners received a trophy and a cash prize, with second and third place winning a cash prize also.
