Local hero: Maldon Watch Manager Martin Cable BEM

A Maldon firefighter has received a fire service Special Award for serving the town's community for 45 years.

Maldon Fire Station's Watch Manager Martin Cable has received the award at an annual presentation of long service medals, held online for the first time in its history, due to the pandemic. The presentation honours those who have given more than 20 years' service, with special awards going to those who have served for more than 40 years.

Police are asking any drivers with information on bricks being thrown at vehicles on a mid-Essex stretch of the A12 to come forward.

The appeal comes after a man and his six-year-old son, who were travelling in a Citroen van northbound near Rivenhall End, had a lucky escape when the windscreen was smashed by a brick. It is believed the brick was thrown from a bridge at 4.25pm on Monday, 25 January.

Heybridge Basin: questions have been asked over what checks should be in place following Brexit

Members of Heybridge Basin Parish Council have raised questions over border controls at marinas following Brexit.

A meeting of the council yesterday (Tuesday, 3 February) heard from some members how prior to the UK joining the European Union in 1972, those arriving and mooring at the marina had to register and have their boats checked under a system managed by HM Coastguard.

Essex County Council has taken the decision to suspend services at Sandon Park and Ride

A decision has been taken to suspend Sandon and Colchester Park and Ride services as of Saturday, February 6 due to Covid-19 – leaving a funding hole in the county council's budget.

The suspension of the service is in response to strict government guidance urging people to stay at home and only travel when absolutely necessary, to prevent the spread of coronavirus, as well as dramatically reduced numbers of people using the service.

The future of the chapel is under discussion

The future of the dilapidated former Wesleyan chapel in Heybridge Basin was discussed by councillors today (Tuesday, 2 February).

The chapel in Basin Road, built by Maldon builder and timber merchant John Sadd and Sons in around 1834, is featured on the Save Britain's Heritage website as it is one of the only Georgian nonconformist chapels to survive in its almost original condition.
