STANDING proud in a glass case, one of the first exhibits visitors to Maldon's Combined Military Services Museum will see is something of an emblem for the town.

The Viking sword, unearthed at a site somewhere in Heybridge, dates to the era of the Battle of Maldon in 991. Whether it was definitely used in the battle and who by - Viking or Saxon - are matters there can be no absolute certainty on, but it is the most likely real-life relic of the famous fight we have.

The East of England Ambulance Service has been placed in special measures

A DAMNING report on the ambulance service covering Maldon reveals "poor leadership" that has led to failures to protect staff and patients from potential sexual abuse and fostered an internal culture of bullying and harassment.

The trust has been found to have failed to meet 12 aspects of its legal obligations in the shocking Care and Quality Commission (CQC) report published yesterday (Wednesday, 30 September).

A report into an outbreak of a killer bug in patients from Maldon and other areas of mid-Essex last year (2019) has found the infection could have been picked up earlier in some of those who died.

Maldon patients were among those infected with the invasive Group A streptococcal (iGAS) bug in the outbreak between February and August last year. Some of the victims contracted the disease through skin ulcers or wounds that were being treated and dressed by community nurses.

Essex Wildlife Trust has vowed not to allow voluntary access to its land for badger culling

BADGER culling will not be allowed on any of Maldon's Essex Wildlife Trust land if government plans change to include the county, the charity has vowed.

The statement from the Essex trust comes after the Government decided to extend its culling initiative to six new counties this year, taking the expected kill to the biggest yet – 70,000 badgers nationally, equating to 35 per cent of the badger population.
