'Jammers reel in 3 points at the Len Salmon': Maldon & Tiptree FC win hard fought game against Bowers & Pitsea

By Lee Witney 14th Nov 2023

Perhaps unsurprisingly, manager Liam Bailey named an unchanged side that so impressively dismantled Wroxham at Park Drive last weekend.

Before the game, there was a service and impeccably observed 2 minutes' silence for Armistice Day.

The Jammers were slow out of the blocks and the hosts had an early chance when Matt Price was released down the left hand side, his ball in was cleared away with Kai Redgrave lurking as Maldon survived an early scare.

With just 5 minutes played though, Ben Williamson put Bowers ahead as nodded home at the near post.

The hosts nearly doubled their lead in the 10th minute, but Price was denied by a great save from Luca Collins at his near post as Maldon were in danger of being swept away early on.

Maldon eventually stirred into life and Louie Remi showed great athleticism to keep a long pass in play, his cross in was cleared a corner that was hooked over by Jayden Randell.

More good goalkeeping from Collins to deny Redgrave and then Price kept the Jammers in the hunt as the game hit a lull heading towards half time.

Louie Britton had chances to add to his goal tally (if you're reading this Chorley, he played terribly and should definitely stay with us permanently as punishment......) but he volleyed wide from a Remi cross and hit the outside of the post with a free kick from the edge of the area with the final chance of the first half.

The second half began and just 5 minutes in, there was a turning point and a huge stroke of luck for Maldon as Bowers hit the woodwork twice in a matter of moments- Lissandro Cassandra smacking the underside of the bar and then rebound coming back off the post.

Maldon might've leveled a minute later as Bowers keeper David Hughes missed a freekick but was bailed out by his defenders who hammered the ball away.

With just over 20 minutes left to play, the Jammers did have their goal thank to George Smith who poked home a lovely cross in from substitute Harry Phillips.

Barely a minute later and we were ahead and it was a goal made by the excellence of young midfielder Milton Oni. His burst down the right hand created space which he took full advantage of, cutting infield and playing the ball to Phillips. His pass was cut out, but only as far as Terrell

Egbri who smashed the ball into the roof of the net to bag his first of the season and send the traveling fans wild.

Bowers were rocking and only some sensational goalkeeping from Hughes kept Maldon from running away with things as he denied Britton twice in a minute, firstly saving with his trailing leg when the Maldon frontman was put through by Harrison Chatting and then again with his foot when put in by Egbri.

Bowers thought they'd found an equaliser with 10 minutes left, but their celebrations were cut short by the Assistant's flag for offside.

As they had done with the shots that hit the woodwork, Maldon took full advantage of Bowers' misfortune and in the 86th minute, Harry Phillips sealed the points, putting the finishing touch on a move that was borne out of the tenacity of Smith to win the back on the halfway line. He carried the ball forward, beating 3 Bowers men in the process before laying it off to Phillips to fire past Hughes to make it 3-1 to the Jammers.

A late Bowers penalty as Lewis Jaggs was penalised for a coming together in the box was blasted home by Williamson to set up a grandstand finish, but Maldon expertly saw the game out to claim their 4th win in a row and their 6th in the last 7 games.

Next up, we welcome Bury Town to Park Drive for a final home fixture until Boxing Day.

It's BaileyBaaaaaalll, you can keep your Pochettino.........!
