St. Peter's with its chime rack

St. Peter's Goldhanger is one of hundreds of churches around the world that will be taking part in special celebrations this June to mark the bicentenary of the invention of the 'Ellacombe Chimes' – a remarkable device to enable all the church bells to be rung by one person.

The Rev Henry Thomas Ellacombe was curate at St Mary's Church in Bitton in South Gloucestershire 200 years ago. Fed up with his bellringers' "wayward behaviour" he created a system with a set of pulleys to allow one trusted person to ring all the bells.

Both the company behind the proposals for Bradwell B new nuclear power station and a campaign group against the development have given their response to the end of the Environment Agency's (EA) public consultation on the design of the nuclear reactor.

The public consultation on the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) of the 'UK HPR1000' reactor, which is planned for use at Bradwell B, closed on Sunday, 4 April.

Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford: one of the three main hospitals run by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust

INSPECTORS who paid an unannounced visit to the hospitals trust that manages Broomfield and St Peter's found there are "effective processes in place" to keep patients safe from infection.

The focused inspection was carried out on 17 February at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust after there had been more than one outbreak of Covid-19 transmission within the trust's three main hospitals, which include Basildon, Southend and Broomfield.
