The death of Sarah Everard has brought women's safety fears to the fore

Essex County Council is to spend £500,000 on funding a new group to tackle fears about public safety following issues highlighted by the death of Sarah Everard, it was announced yesterday evening (Thursday, 1 April).

A Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with the murder of Sarah Everard following her disappearance while walking home across Clapham Common last month. The outcry over the tragedy has highlighted public fears over safety, particularly that of women.

A police patrol out in Maldon town centre this week

The Chief Constable of Essex Police has told the public "let's not to mess this up now" over the Easter weekend as people from different households get together again - many in the county for the first time since early December.

His comments come after restrictions were eased on Monday (29 March), allowing people to mix outdoors, including in private gardens, in groups of six or as two households.

St Peter on the Wall

Although Southminster is only 75 minutes' train ride from the middle of London, if you stand at St. Peter on the Wall, just a few miles away, you could think you were at the edge of the world. There is an eerie stillness and beauty to this spot like no other place I know.

The chapel of St Peter at Bradwell is built on the gatehouse of the Roman fort of Othona (or Ithancaster) by the Saxon Bishop Cedd in around 654 AD. Clearly this accounts for the "on the Wall" name, but it also recalls the fact that Othona was part of an Eastward-facing "wall" of shore fortifications as elaborate as Hadrian's Wall in the north.
