You don't have to go to Devon or Cornwall to find a coast rich in legends of smuggling: our local coastline has a heritage replete with smugglers' inns, secret tunnels and cellars and silent visitors to remote creeks and village hiding places.

Brexit has made payment of import duties something of a hot topic these days, but it is nothing new. Governments have always tried to levy duties on imported goods, and traders and customers have always tried to evade paying them, particularly in times when these duties have generally been seen as excessive.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has recorded this video message praising the "incredible achievement" of all those involved in the Covid-19 vaccination rollout across mid Essex.

Revealing that a third of all people in the area have now received their first dose of a Covid vaccine, Mr Hancock gives a special "shout out" to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford City Racecourse, the vaccine hub at Maldon District Council and the GP surgeries taking part.

Unpaid carers in Essex who are aged 16 and over are now eligible to receive their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination.

In a joint appeal, Essex County Council (ECC) and the charity Carers First are urging all unpaid carers who have not yet been invited for an appointment by the NHS to visit the National Booking Service or call 119 to see if they are eligible.

Kickstart Essex aims to help 600 unemployed young people across the county to access paid work placements

A government scheme to help find and fund six-month work placements for unemployed 16 to 24-year-olds has been taken on by Essex County Council (ECC).

Kickstart Essex has been approved by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) as a provider for the scheme - with a role of helping employers who come forward to access the funds.

Heybridge and Maldon still have substantial reminders of the former huge local employer, E.H. Bentall & Co, famous for their ironworks and manufacture of agricultural machinery.

It later diversified its output, and in the 1900's made a valiant attempt to compete in the exciting new world of motor vehicle manufacture.
