As temperatures climb and household energy costs remain a concern, more UK homeowners are looking for ways to keep their homes cool without the expense of air conditioning.

One solution gaining popularity is solar control window film - a specialist coating applied directly to existing glass that can significantly reduce heat entering a property.

Traditionally used in offices and commercial buildings, window film is increasingly being installed in homes, particularly in conservatories, loft conversions and rooms with large south-facing windows that can become uncomfortably hot during the summer months.

According to industry specialists, modern solar control films can block a substantial proportion of solar heat before it enters a room, helping homeowners create more comfortable living spaces without replacing existing glazing.

George Bennett, founder of Essex-based window film company AWTUK, says demand has increased sharply in recent years.

"People are becoming much more aware of how much heat enters through glass," he said.

"We're seeing growing interest from homeowners who have conservatories, bedrooms or open-plan living spaces that become difficult to use during hot weather. Many are surprised to learn that window film can often solve the problem without the need for expensive replacement windows or air conditioning."

Unlike blinds and curtains, which can trap heat between the fabric and the glass, solar control film works by reflecting and rejecting heat at the window itself.

Many modern products are designed to remain almost invisible from inside the property while still allowing natural light to enter. They can also help protect furniture, flooring and artwork by blocking harmful UV rays.

Industry figures report that enquiries are increasingly coming from homeowners with large glass extensions and bifold doors, reflecting a wider trend towards open, light-filled living spaces.

Installation is typically completed within a day and does not require major building work. Costs vary depending on the size and type of glass involved but are generally considerably lower than installing air conditioning or replacing windows.

With forecasters predicting another warm summer, experts believe demand for cooling solutions that do not add to household energy consumption is likely to continue growing.

For homeowners struggling with overheating rooms, window film is becoming an increasingly popular option to improve comfort while keeping running costs to a minimum.
