His Majesty King Charles III opened the service of prayer and reflection to honour The Queen at St Paul's Cathedral this evening (September 9).

This morning, Maldon District Councillors Robert Boyce MBE and Stephen Nunn officially opened a Book of Condolence for the public to 'convey their private messages'.

Later, in a pre-recorded address to the nation, the new King said: "I speak to you today with feelings of profound sorrow.

"Throughout her life, Her Majesty The Queen – my beloved mother – was an inspiration and example to me and all my family.

"Her dedication and devotion as sovereign never wavered – through times of change and progress, through times of joy and celebration, and through times of sadness and loss.

"As The Queen did herself with such unswerving devotion, I too now solemnly pledge myself, throughout the remaining time God grants me, to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation.

"I shall endeavour to serve you with loyalty, respect and love, as I have throughout my life."

Camilla, the former Duchess of Cornwall, has now become Queen consort of the United Kingdom.

King Charles' eldest son, Prince William, now assumes the Scottish titles and succeeds his father as the Duke of Cornwall.

The King announced: "Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales.

Following months of controversy surrounding his other son, Prince Harry, and his wife Meghan, King Charles paid tribute to them.

He said: "I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan, as they continue to build their lives overseas."

Finally, The King ended his address by expressing his thanks to his 'darling mama'.

King Charles continued: "In our sorrow, let us remember and draw strength from the light of her example.

"To my darling mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late papa, I want simply to say this: Thank you."

The new King ended his tribute with an excerpt from Shakespeare's Hamlet: "May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."
