Blockbusters on offer this September as Maldon Film Club prepares for 19th season
After a successful 18th year, Maldon Film Club is already preparing for its new season, set to begin on Tuesday 12 September.
The programme for the 2023/24 season, influenced by the members' votes, will cover a wide variety of themes with films from all over the world.
Opening with the Oscar-nominated Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, the season continues until 22 May 2024. Films will be shown fortnightly on Tuesdays in 2023 and Wednesdays in 2024.
The Club meets at Maldon Town Hall, doors open at 7.15pm, wine and soft drinks are available, at a charge, from 7.30pm and unless notified to the contrary all films commence at 8pm.
See below for the confirmed programme from September to December:
- September 12 - Mrs Harris Goes to Paris
- September 26 - Everything Everywhere All at Once
- October 10 - Broker
- October 24 - Tar
- November 7 - Brian and Charles
- November 21 - Lunana – A Yak in the Classroom
- December 5 - A Man Called Otto
- December 19 - Blind Ambition
From January until May 2024, the programme includes Close, Quiet Girl, The Banshees of Inisherin, Decision to Leave, Women Talking, Living and the 1988 classic Cinema Paradiso.
Many of the 19 films to be screened have received Oscar or BAFTA awards or nominations. Organisers hope the programme "will offer something for everybody".
From September, the price of an annual subscription will be £30, giving members free admission to the season's 19 films. That amounts to less than £1.60 per film. In addition, there are limited places for junior members aged 16-18 in full time education and training at the reduced cost of £20.
Members are asked to give their reactions to the films shown, to help the committee compile the programme for the following season. Membership is open to all, and new members will be made welcome. Members' guests pay £4 per film.
For membership enquiries, visit the Maldon Film Club website, go to the Maldon Visitor Information Centre, or phone 01621 869340.
In March, Maldon Film Club won the Art and Culture Award at the town's Annual Community Awards, "for providing much needed culture to our town, offering a multitude of films and entertainment throughout the year".
Film Club spokesperson John Salisbury has invited the public to attend the first screening as guests, to meet committee members and decide whether to join.
