Maldon District Council has announced that work will begin on a replacement pontoon on August 5.

The original pontoon, a much-loved asset of the Burnham-on-crouch waterfront, was damaged "beyond repair" by Storm Eunice in February 2022.

Installation of its replacement will take up to two weeks and will be protected by fencing while work is ongoing.

The replacement pontoon will be reinstated on the same footprint as before, but includes additional safety features including perimeter handrails and new non-slip decking.

The pontoon has historically been used by the foot passenger ferry, as well as families for crabbing and socialising.

Cllr Richard Siddal, Leader of Maldon District Council said; "I am delighted that work on the installation of the pontoon will start very soon. The pontoon is a much-loved structure in the town, and I know that it has been missed.

"Please bear with us while the structure is being installed and follow us on social media for updates on progress.

"We're working hard to ensure that the new pontoon will be in place before the start of Burnham Week when I know that the town will be especially busy with families and visitors enjoying one of the longest running regattas on the UK mainland."

The project has been funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
