Temporary traffic restrictions will be in place on Butt Lane, Maldon, from October 2, as Essex Highways prepares to remove and reconstruct a retaining wall.

Plans announced this afternoon (September 27) will see the reconstruction of the retaining wall at the junction between Butt Lane and Downs Road. OneNetwork states the restrictions may last until October 20. A one-way system will cover 85 metres of the road, allowing traffic to flow in a north-easterly direction only. A signed diversion route will be in place in the other direction for 24 hours a day, until the works are complete.

However, Butt Lane Car Park will remain fully accessible from the High Street and pedestrian access will remain unaffected by the restrictions. This may be a relief to those looking forward to the relaunch of Maldon Market at the Car Park on October 12.

The site team will be working from Monday to Friday, 8am until 5pm.

A representative for Essex Highways said: "The wall, which is visible from the highway, is in a deteriorating condition and has been leaning for a significant period. Regular monitoring of the structure has been carried out during this time.

"The area will benefit from a landscaping scheme once the wall construction is complete, that shall enhance the local area."

The reconstruction of the wall, located to the rear of the highway verge, will involve a complete replacement of the structure with two smaller retaining walls. It will also involve removing two semi-mature silver birch trees, due to the additional risk they pose in the event of root damage, and their proximity to telecommunication cables.
