Essex Police have issued a warning on social media after far-right protests swept the country last week, encouraging the public to stay aware of "disinformation" online.

Essex Police Assistant Chief Constable, Andy Mariner, issued warnings yesterday and today (August 6 and 7) reminding the public to "ignore" information suggesting there will be protests in specific locations around Essex.

He said: "Our message is clear - ignore it.

"There is information going around on the internet highlighting specific locations around the country and some of those details of locations are just plain false, including here in Essex.

"If you turn up thinking of causing an issue, all you'll find is people getting on with their days".

The statement follows a number of posts by users on social media speculating that protests are set to take place in Chelmsford and Southend on Wednesday evening.

Yesterday, the Assistant Chief Constable issued a similar warning, encouraging those seeing the posts to not share them.

The Assistant Chief Constable then went on to warn those planning to cause trouble, saying "We'll be ready and waiting for you and you will be arrested."

The protest rumours follow widespread violent disorder across the UK, with specific locations such as immigration centres and mosques targeted.
