A renowned artist who made Maldon his home is preparing to show his locally inspired work at the Maeldune Heritage Centre from October 18.

After returning to the UK from Malaga, Maldon became home to George Kowzan in 2017 and has since become a source of inspiration for his work.

His latest exhibition, 'Into Abstraction', is said to be a vivid and unique portrayal of Promenade Park and The Hythe.

In 2021, George portrayed the iconic views of Prom Park and The Hythe in his exhibition 'Same place: different eyes'. This month, he intends to reveal an exciting collection of paintings depicting these same places in yet another unique way.

George has experimented with a spectrum of artistic styles, but consistency lies in his preference to depict ideas and concepts above and beyond scenic realism.

He told Nub News: "Into Abstraction aims to inspire imagination, convey emotion and spark ideas that mirror the relationship between those places depicted and the people who use them."

'Prom Park Boogie Woogie' draws on George's experience of habitual walks around the park. As an instinctive work, it is upbeat and energetic.

Inspiration also comes from song lyrics that resonate with scenes and influence the way he depicts them. "In the summertime when the weather is high, you can stretch right up and touch the sky" were the distant lyrics flowing through as scenes of Prom Park and The Hythe were recreated in the artist's ethereal style.

Meanwhile, late night and early morning walks evoked the isolation and solitude reflected in Simon and Garfunkel's 'Sound of Silence' and its opening lines, "Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again".

Visitors are invited to take advantage of home-made tapas and drinks on Friday 20 October from 5pm until 7.30pm. They will be among the first to take in the new collection.

The Maeldune Heritage Centre is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am until 4pm. The exhibition runs until Saturday 4 November.
