Travelodge guests in Maldon had an unexpectedly early wake-up call this morning (October 14), when they were evacuated over fears a fire had broken out.

One guest staying at the hotel in the Blackwater Retail Park reportedly woke up to find his room engulfed in smoke. The fire alarm was activated at 5.45am and the hotel was evacuated.

Another guest described the incident as "a bit of a shock".

They said: "I could smell smoke and the night receptionist was knocking on doors, asking people to evacuate.

"It was a bit chaotic with people being half-asleep. Everyone was in good spirits though."

Fire crews were called to the scene at 5.56am.

A spokesperson for the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service told Nub News: "After searching the building, firefighters recorded the incident as a false alarm."

They cleared the room of smoke and reportedly advised guests to "be aware" of any further incidents.

Shortly after their arrival, the nearby Greggs bakery opened, and guests were able to warm up with a hot drink.

They were allowed to re-enter the hotel at 6.28am. No further issues were reported.

A spokesperson for Travelodge has been approached for comment.
