Essex Fire and Rescue Service has issued these tips following county flooding

WITH Essex hit by floods in the past two days the fire service has issued a warning and advice to drivers following the dramatic rescue of a couple from a car stranded in deep water yesterday (Saturday, 5 December).

Firefighters launched a water rescue boat was launched to reach the vehicle in Millers Green Road, Ongar, after they drove into flood water and became trapped at around 10am.

Due to the remote location, fire service teams used the What3Words app to help crews locate the car - providing them with a precise 3 metre-squared site.

A spokesperson for Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: "With flooding affecting much of Essex this weekend, sadly incidents like this where people drive into flood water are more common than you think."

The service has issued the following tips:

-If you come across a flooded road, turn around and find another route

-Do not attempt to drive through flood water - even just a couple of feet of water is enough to float your vehicle

-Reduce your speed

-Allow extra braking distance

The brigade also warned that firefighters cannot attend to recover your vehicle if it gets stuck - so please only call 999 if there is a risk to life.

How to download the What3Words app

This incident is another excellent example of how the What3Words app can make it easier for crews to reach people in need as quickly as possible.

What3Words has divided the world into three metre squares - all of which have unique three-word combinations. It makes it easier for emergency service teams to find exactly where you are, particularly if you're in a remote or isolated area.

You can find out more about the What3Words app by visiting the Essex Fire and Rescue Service website here.
