Heybridge Basin Regatta to return this Saturday – full event details
The popular annual Heybridge Basin Regatta will return this Saturday (June 17) with a whole new look.
From 10am, families can expect to see and participate in familiar regatta activities, such as the famed 'greasy pole pillow fight' across the lock, along with a range of new games.
Following last year's event, organisers have responded to feedback by introducing a raft (no pun intended) of changes for 2023. These include:
- A new swimming race.
- A photographic competition, in which pictures will be published in the official Regatta Calendar next year.
- A 'Welly Wanging' competition for adults and children.
- A magic and balloon entertainer for children.
- A bigger organising committee, with all-new signage for the event.
- A brand-new PA system, for everyone to hear all announcements throughout the day.
- An official photographer.
However, organiser Marie Ellis told Nub News the SUP (stand up paddle board) race will not go ahead this year, "due to a calendar clash".
Despite that, the regatta's usual entertainment will include shanty singers (Motley Crew and the Hoy Shanty Crew), live music in the evening, prize stalls, unique stallholders, the raft race and other races and competitions.
With temperatures set to hit 23°C on Saturday, a quick dip in the lock may be tempting for many visitors. Get your pillows at the ready...
In the meantime, check out these highlights from last year's event:
