The organisers of a Charity Soup Lunch project in Maldon have replaced a tree planted in Promenade Park to celebrate their work, after the previous one died.

A new tree and plaque was recently placed in Maldon's Promenade Park sensory garden to mark "hugely popular" Charity Soup Lunches. For the last 12 winters, they have been served at Maldon Little Ship Club by John and Diana Rogers, Sue Woods and other loyal helpers.

The lunches attracted an enormous following of regular guests - who enjoyed the soup, the view, and the friendship of the clubhouse. The soup lunches were initiated by a group of friends including Chris and David Dove. With helpers Lynn Cross, Inga Winger and other club members, they provided a social focus for local and visiting people.

Over the last decade, the team has raised thousands of pounds for charities and other good local causes.

In March 2020, just before the COVID lockdown, it was suggested using some of the funds to purchase a tree to help the environment. A Robinia tree was sourced and planted by the Council at the nearby seafood kiosk. Sadly, it did not survive – last summer's drought was thought to be a final blow to it.

However, late last year, former Maldon District councillor Mark Heard (then Deputy Mayor) was prompted by Maldon in Bloom's Doreen Linton to find a replacement tree and a Contorted (or Corkscrew) Willow was planted to commemorate the team's remarkable achievement last month.

Organiser John Rogers said: "The whole Soup Lunch team is grateful to Past Councillor Heard and Doreen Linton for their recognition by installing the plaque and replacement tree."

The colourful foliage of the tree is said to not only support the environment, "but also provide pleasure for visitors to Maldon's Prom". The plaque beside it reminds passers by of twelve successful years of Charity Soup Lunches held at Maldon's Little Ship Club.
