Maldon Society committee member, Dorreen Linton, tells Nub News all about the organisation's latest projects in the town.

Founded in 1957, The Maldon Society is a very active local group. It undertakes many different areas of interest and encourages civic pride in and around Maldon.

Dorreen, Publicity & Heritage Affairs Manager for the organisation, said: "The Society continues with its aims of promoting and preserving the historical heritage of Maldon and its surrounding area.

"It is actively connecting with local businesses, churches, voluntary organisations, councils, residents, and young people to ensure there is a local awareness and pride in our heritage."

There is a committee made up of nine residents, who are responsible for different areas of management.

Public Maldon Society meetings are held once a month, except for in August and December. They are held on the first Thursday of each month at the Cygnet Room, behind The Swan Hotel in Maldon High Street.

The Maldon Society has several ongoing projects in which various committee members are involved.

This includes liaising with local Councils on planning applications, voluntarily running the Maeldune Heritage Centre and Maldon Visitor Information Centre, and distributing newsletters to members.

The Society is in the process of interviewing Maldon residents about their life stories, which are then edited and transferred to the website or burned as CDs. In the future, it is hoped these will be available to listen to at the listening station in the Maeldune Centre.

Ongoing work is being undertaken to digitally copy residents' historic photographs to show them on the screen at the Maeldune Centre, as well as raising funds for new equipment to make the visual archive more accessible.

A new blue plaque is also set to be installed in the next few months, which will be announced nearer the time.

The Maldon Society intends to continue supporting other local groups, businesses and its links with Plume Academy's staff and students - by attending their events.

The Maldon Society is currently seeking a correspondence secretary.

For more information on the organisation's next two meetings, see below:

Doors open at 6.30pm, and meetings start at 7pm.
