The Tour of Britain cycling event passed through the Maldon District this afternoon (September 8), met with excited crowds and some delays for motorists.

Councillor Fiona Clegg, Deputy Mayor of Burnham-On-Crouch, told Nub News: "I was in a crowd at Eve's Corner next to the Limes farm shop, which afforded an excellent view down the long straight there.

"It was a real thrill to watch these elite riders whipping by."

120 professional riders, including World Champions, Tour de France winners and Olympians, went through South Woodham Ferrers to Althorne this afternoon.

They reached Burnham at around 1.15pm, racing down Maldon Road and turning left onto Church Road by the plane tree, past Ormiston Rivers Academy, and on towards Southminster. From there, they rode through Asheldham, Dengie, Tillingham and Bradwell before heading west through Steeple, Mayland, Latchingdon, Cold Norton, Mundon and Purleigh.

Finally, the riders headed into Bicknacre on their onward journey to Harlow.
