Local radio presenter David Baker, and Jane Williams, will stand in the local elections on May 4, to represent Wickham Bishops at Maldon District Council.

David is an award-winning DJ and owns Breeze Love Songs, formerly known as Chelmer Radio.

David Baker:

"I am delighted to be a local candidate standing up for the Labour Party and its values. This is an opportunity for the Wickham Bishops and Woodham to have Labour representation at Maldon District Council and for us to speak up for what matters to the area.

"In our area, we are seeing more planning applications for houses where the infrastructure is just not there and with local schools full, doctors full, and everywhere just packing up. We need to make sure our village is protected.

"We are known for a warm community feel and I'm here with Jane Williams to keep it that way as residents of this great area.

"For 13 years, we have been taken for a ride."

"For 13 years, we have been taken for a ride. Energy prices, food prices, inflation, tax rises and mortgage rate hikes, NHS crippled with over seven million waiting for treatment.

"There is so much affecting everyday families and I really do know what it's like personally. It really is time for change.

"I hope you'll tick the two Labour boxes on May 4. We can help change things for the better. It won't happen overnight, but it's a pathway to getting things done and fixed.

"Already, we are seeing changing opinions on the doorsteps - which is no surprise considering the mess this country as a whole is in."

Jane Williams:

"I have decided to stand to give residents the opportunity to vote for the Labour Party – so that there is more democratic representation on Maldon District Council.

"I would like to see policies which are fair and show equality and inclusivity towards women, people of different ethnic, religious or cultural backgrounds; those with disability or difficulty of any type; and those with varied sexual orientation or with differing gender identities.

"There seems to be a complete lack of understanding that the decline in environmental quality is having a hugely damaging impact on humans."

"I would like to see policies to help young people, in particular access housing and home-owning opportunities – rather than favouring developers and large companies which make huge profits, when new homes are being built. I would like to see all new homes built with proper environmental polices in place – for example, why are new homes being built without solar panels?

"I would like to see a greater focus on the quality of the environment for people and for local wildlife and habitats. There seems to be a complete lack of understanding that the decline in environmental quality is having a hugely damaging impact on humans as well as other life on the planet. In local terms, loss of green spaces, reduced opportunities to access the outdoors for leisure and recreation, and policies which do not encourage people to interact with, respect, value and appreciate, nature are extremely damaging."

District and Parish Council elections will take place on May 4.

In the run-up to the local elections in May, Maldon Nub News will speak to all candidates standing, and to members of the community who feel certain issues need to be tackled by our elected representatives.
