A "record" 18 Liberal Democrat candidates will stand for election on May 4, offering voters the option of a "clear vision" for Maldon District Council.

The Liberal Democrats hope to build on the election of Councillor Paula Spenceley in a by-election in April last year. Her election followed Councillor John Driver's election to Maldon Town Council in February 2022.

They are joined by a team of other candidates with a history of community activity, including volunteering with local groups. Candidates' experience ranges from chief executives and directors of large organisations, business owners, and teachers - to dedicated key workers in the health, care, and charity sectors.

The Lib Dems say their main drive is "to listen to residents and campaign tirelessly for the infrastructure the area so badly needs". This includes better access to GP and health services, more school places, improved transport and roads, and youth services.

Cllr Spenceley said: "Since my election a year ago, I have worked hard on key issues, bringing some clarity on the new flood alleviation scheme plans for Heybridge, and fighting for better councillor scrutiny of the Five-Year Housing Land Supply, so developers don't have an unfair advantage and the need for infrastructure is more accurately planned.

"Residents who have contacted me for help know that I respond quickly and do all I can for them. I am so excited that we now have a fantastic group of like-minded people who all want to work for the community, too.

"This district urgently needs focus on the serious issues it now faces and that is what our new team for the community can bring. We are all local people dedicated to our communities and to local issues.

"Voters who want to see a real change for the better, rather than re-packaged more of the same, can bring that change about on Thursday, May 4, with a vote for their Lib Dem candidates."
