With local District and Parish Council elections just around the corner, two Conservative candidates have outlined their reasons for standing for election (or re-election) to Maldon District Council.

Councillor Bruce Heubner, who currently represents the Heybridge East Ward alongside fellow Conservative Councillor Anne Beale, says he wants to curb speeding, reduce crime, and keep council tax low.

He also says he aims to stop "unlawful" planning developments and secure grants for local projects in Heybridge.

Cllr Heubner told Nub News: "It's not just Maldon – it's Heybridge I care passionately about. I am standing in Heybridge East, Heybridge Parish, and Heybridge Basin Parish, and I hope I will be successful with your vote."

Abdul "Jhual" Hafiz, the former Town Mayor and owner of Maldon Spice, is standing to represent Maldon West on the District Council.

He told Nub News: "I moved to Maldon 37 years ago to start a new business in the town and through this I became very interested in the town's affairs.

"During my 12 years as Chairman of Maldon District Islamic Culture Association, I was instrumental in establishing Maldon's first Mosque in the town centre.

"I was first elected to the Town Council in 2015 and have actively served on many of its various committees and working groups. I am passionate about our town and want to bring my experience to serve the residents of Maldon West on the District Council."

Mr Hafiz pledges to:

  1. Fight for a new hospital in Maldon and more health/medical hubs to ensure quicker access to GPs and reduce appointment waiting times.
  2. Work closely with Essex County Council, striving to ensure roads, footpaths, and street lighting are properly maintained.
  3. Work with environmental agencies and the police to ensure the Maldon West ward and the surrounding district are "safer and more sustainable places" to live and work.
