A family-run high street business is encouraging Maldon students across the town to develop a love for reading, after donating 650 books to a local school.

Maldon Books, owned by Olivia Rosenthall, gave the books to year seven and year eight students studying at Plume Academy's Mill Road campus in celebration of World Book Day on Thursday (3 March).

The charity event, held annually in the UK, aims to celebrate reading while giving every child in full-time education a voucher to be spent on books.

Ms Kristie Theobald, who teaches English at Plume, said she was "absolutely thrilled and delighted" with the donation, which will see 650 free books being handed out to students at the school.

Ms Theobald said: "This carefully planned whole lower school event was brilliantly organised and devised by Ms Theobald.

"During the sponsored read, students could read whatever they wanted - books, e-books, poetry, comics, anything goes.

"Sharing books is great too, in fact recommended, as well as listening to audio books."
