RESTAURANTS, cafes and other businesses across Maldon can now apply for fast-tracked pavement licences to allow alfresco dining.

Applications to set up tables and chairs in the street or other outdoor spaces will get a decision within as little as two weeks.

The social-distancing friendly open air option has gained popularity as pandemic restrictions have eased and life returns to a 'new normal', but Maldon District Council has warned that businesses need to operate within their planning and licence conditions to avoid enforcement action.

The council is urging businesses to get creative with possible solutions to the issue of narrow pavements and limited space – something the quaint and historic Maldon High Street is known for. Suggestions for the use of open public spaces, such as parks and car parks, will be considered.

All applications will be subject to public consultation, even though the turnaround for answers will be tight - and the closing date is 31 August. The special licences are temporary and can be granted until 1 April 2021.

Councillor Adrian Fluker, Leader of Maldon District Council, said: "Temporary pavement licences will allow businesses to observe social distancing measures whilst welcoming customers back to enjoy all that the district has to offer.

"We're also keen to receive other more innovative ideas about making use of public space."
