A riding instructor from Maldon was presented with the 'Great Neighbour Award' by Sir John Whittingdale at BBC Essex's 'Make a Difference Awards', last Thursday (November 3).

Steph Cox rescued her elderly neighbour after she found him on the ground, surrounded by flames, in his garden in September last year.

Sir John said: "I am absolutely delighted that Steph has won the Great Neighbour Award, which is thoroughly deserved."

Brian Hawes, who is in his 80s, had been using a heat gun to get rid of some weeds when a piece of paper caught fire by accident.

He fell over trying to pick it up, and the fire spread quickly.

Steph spotted a plume of smoke coming from next door, so went to investigate.

Upon finding Brian lying on the floor of his burning shed, Steph dragged him out.

Brian was left with severe burns on his back, but later said: "I know that, without Steph, I would not be here."

Steph cared for him while they waited for an ambulance, before he was taken to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford.

Sir John added: "Without her quick thinking and courage, Brian would almost certainly have died.

"It was an honour to present her with the award."

The ceremony, hosted by BBC Essex, was held at Hatfield Place in Hatfield Peverel.

Jennifer Tolhurst, Lord-Lieutenant of Essex, also attended the event.
