The Salvation Army shop in Maldon High Street has been taking part in Sustainable Fashion Week, encouraging shoppers to reconsider how they buy clothes.
Sustainable Fashion Week ends this Sunday (October 8), but there are still plenty of opportunities for people to help stop pre-loved clothing going to landfill and get a bargain at the same time.
Salvation Army shop manager Kevin Dawson-Jennings is backing the 'Re-Wear Revolution'.
He told Nub News: "The statistics prove that we have to change. There has to be a transition to sustainable fashion.
"The environmental impact that even of a brand-new pair of jeans has is utterly incredible. It takes around 10,000 litres of water to grow the one kilo of cotton needed for a single pair of jeans.
"The sooner people move over to a pre-loved way of thinking, the better the planet is going to be."
Kevin says the fashion industry is making changes to become more sustainable, but feels they must happen "sooner, rather than later".
For the last 14 years, the shop has offered a 'Re-Bag' scheme, in which shoppers fill a bag with clothing donations and receive a £2 voucher in return. The shop sells around 30 Re-Bags every week.
Next week, the Salvation Army shop will launch a brand new week-long initiative called 'Get Your Kit On'. From October 9, it will challenge brand new kits and "the ridiculous cost of buying them", by offering pre-loved alternatives instead.
"We've got hundreds of football kits to sell," says Kevin, who created the campaign.
"We're covering everybody from non-league to international football."
The shop is accepting more donations of football kits and is seeking pre-loved kits from local teams such as Heybridge Swifts and Maldon & Tiptree FC. For more information, contact Salvation Army's Maldon Charity Shop via email or call 01621 843347.
