Maldon Town Hall and the Salvation Army Shop joined several Macmillan Coffee Mornings taking place throughout the Maldon District today (September 29).

At the Town Hall, a colourful array of cupcakes, brownies, mousses, and trifles meant there was confectionary to satisfy anybody's sweet tooth. Baked by residents, all the cakes were available for a small donation to Macmillan Cancer Support.

The charity provides specialist healthcare, information, and financial support to those affected by cancer.

Maldon Town Mayor, Councillor Andrew Lay, told Nub News: "This Coffee Morning is in its second year at the Town Hall, and it's been fantastic. Loads of different people from throughout the community have visited – from Wentworth Primary School, local care homes, and various organisations.

"It's been an absolute success. I thank all the residents for their commitment to this wonderful charity."

Even Maldon MP Sir John Whittingdale was on hand to sample the sweet treats.

"I'm here as a resident and a cake lover, but also because I wanted to support this terrific initiative," he told Nub News.

"Everybody has been getting stuck in. It's so good to see so many people here this morning to support a great cause, to socialise, and to enjoy the cakes!"

Just round the corner, on Maldon High Street, the Salvation Army charity shop hosted Breeze Love Songs DJ David Baker, along with even more homemade cakes to raise funds for Macmillan.

Some of the cupcakes were baked by shop manager and District Councillor Kevin Dawson-Jennings' 96-year-old grandmother.

"Maldon's been alive this morning, with everyone supporting Macmillan," he said.

"It gives us great pleasure, being a charity ourselves, that the Salvation Army Trading Company is able to support another charity."

The total amount raised by each cake sale is still being counted and will be published soon.
