Burnham Carnival visitors could face public transport issues this weekend, amid ongoing railway strikes and bus route diversions, so organisers are urging them to drive.

The popular carnival is set to welcome thousands of visitors from all over Essex, but unforeseen rail strikes and are posing a challenge. Greater Anglia has announced there will be very few trains available over the weekend, further complicated by the lack of a rail replacement bus service.

The usual bus service is running but will terminate at Burnham-On-Crouch Train Station. All stops between the Co-op and the clock tower will be unavailable.

Visitors are encouraged to travel to the carnival by car. Free parking will be available at the Marina, Ormiston Rivers Academy and St Mary's Church. The carnival committee has also arranged for marshals and signs to guide visitors.

Gates at the Marina car park will close between 10.30pm and 11pm. Any cars left overnight will be charged by Maldon District Council to be released.

Continued strike action by ASLEF union rail staff will result in 90 per cent of Greater Anglia services not running this Saturday.

One carnival administrator described the travel troubles as "a pain", as members of the ASLEF union stage their second strike in two weeks.

Burnham Carnival is one of the town's biggest events of the year, attracting spectators of all ages. Activities will commence at 10.30am in the main arena.

In the evening, the town will sparkle with an illuminated procession, starting at 7.30pm. Floats, walking entries, visiting carnival courts and majorettes are set to dazzle visitors.
