Maldon Town Council have announced significant changes to this year's Christmas Fayre, replacing it with a more "modest" light switch-on event.
Maldon Town Council have announced they will be delivering a "modest" Christmas light switch-on event this year, in place of the traditional Christmas Fayre due to take place on Thursday, November 28.
Since the decision in March 2024 by the Council to run the event in its previous format, the organising committee lost two key members, resulting in the decision being made to scrap original plans due to concerns the event would not be able to be delivered to the traditional scale.
In a statement to the press, a spokesperson for Maldon Town Council said: "The Council understands the importance of the Christmas Fayre as a cherished Maldon tradition and is committed to exploring alternative ways to celebrate and support our local businesses and artisans over the festive period.
"With that in mind, in collaboration with local organisations, we will look to organise a modest Christmas Light switch-on event.
"This decision was not taken lightly. The Town Council understands the disappointment this may cause to our community, who have supported the event come rain or shine since it started as a Victorian Night many years ago."
The Council is currently finalising plans for a reduced 2024 event and will share more details in the coming months.
When Maldon Nub News requested further information on this year's event, no confirmation could be given on what residents should expect.
In the meantime, Members will be working hard behind the scenes to shape the 2025 event.
Town Mayor, Cllr Andrew Lay, said "We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the planning and preparation of this year's Christmas Fayre so far. Your dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed.
"We would also like to single out and sincerely thank the outgoing Christmas Fayre working group Chairman, Councillor Michael Pearlman, who has been a driving force over the past ten years and has dedicated so much time and effort in organising the event."
This news will be received with disappointment by the Maldon Community, who in previous years have turned up in droves to the event, which is often packed with entertainment and activities.
Maldon Town Council would welcome feedback from residents as to what they would like to see for next year's festive season. Please let us know your thoughts via email to: [email protected]
