New Tillingham councillor on his hopes following Maldon District Council election
The new councillor for Tillingham has told Nub News of his plans to strengthen collaboration between Maldon District Council and local parishes.
Councillor Matthew Neall was elected on Friday (May 5), standing uncontested in his ward as an independent candidate. He says he was initially shocked to learn Tillingham residents would not get to choose who to represent them on the Council.
However, Cllr Neall said: "This means I will have to work even harder for the residents of the area."
Cllr Neall has been a parish councillor in Bradwell for the past four years, which he says has prepared him for his new role at the District Council.
He added: "The connection between the parish councils and Maldon District Council has been severely broken over the years.
"This is something I want to change, and I will be more visible at the three parish councils located in my ward."
As Cllr Neall is new to Maldon District Council, he says it will "take a little time" for him to find his feet. However, he has urged residents to contact him regarding any local issues, endeavouring to help where possible.
Cllr Neall will replace former Conservative councillor Richard Dewick, who was elected in 2019.
The new councillor said: "The make-up of Maldon has changed dramatically since the last election in 2019. It will be interesting to see how the new council comes together to work for the residents of Maldon."
The District turnout for this year's election was 31 per cent. This is lower than the 33.1 per cent turnout in 2019, but reportedly higher than expected.
Maldon Nub News has published the FULL Maldon District Council election results.
