A flood alert has been issued for many parts of the Maldon District, including the Hythe and Promenade, overnight (August 3).

The message has been issued because minor flooding to coastal roads and footpaths is likely to occur between 1.15am and 3.15am on Friday (August 4). This is reportedly due to an unseasonal low-pressure system causing a small tidal surge.

The following tide at 2.45pm tomorrow is also expected to reach Flood Alert level. Residents and visitors are advised to stay away from 'at risk' areas, and to take care next to the coast.

The Environment Agency is "monitoring the situation" but does not expect it to escalate.

In a statement, the agency said it would update its message by 10am tomorrow.

In March, pictures showed Maldon's historic Thames barges marooned as high tides flooded Hythe Quay.
