Residents in Broad Street Green Road, Heybridge, have complained following overnight road works outside their homes, as work continues on a new development in Maldon.

Work is being carried out to construct access roads to the new roundabout in Broad Street Green, from the Westcombe Park development and the main road.

On Facebook, one resident said it felt as if their house was 'literally vibrating', and they could hear diggers until around 11pm. At 3.30am, the noise started up again, disturbing their children's sleep.

In a letter to residents last month, FM Conway, the contractors working on behalf of Countryside Properties, said road closures would be in place overnight from last Sunday (October 9).

Road closures are currently in place at night, between the hours of 8pm to 6.30am; with two-way traffic lights in place during the day, from 6.30am until 8pm.

Essex Highways is said to have told contractors that the road could only be closed at night. This apparently means FM Conway is not permitted to carry out the works during the daytime.

District councillors have received a number of complaints regarding the overnight works, which are set to continue for the next 'two or three' nights. It is understood the works are expected to be completed this week.

Paula Spenceley, District Councillor for the Heybridge West ward, which includes Broad Street Green, told Nub News she was 'appalled' at what residents had experienced.

She said: "Questions will need to be asked about how the situation has been managed by all those involved.

"We can't expect people to welcome development when they end up with such a negative experience."

Essex County Council has been approached for comment.

Updates to follow.
