Part of Maldon High Street was blocked off on Saturday morning (July 1) as firefighters tackled a blaze in a service yard behind a local business.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 9.33am, closing the road from 153 High Street.

On arrival, crews found a fire in the bins at the back of the property. Firefighters from neighbouring stations in Witham and Chelmsford were also called in to help deal with it.

A spokesperson from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service told Nub News: "The fire was fully extinguished by 10.27am. Crews continued to damp down and monitor the area for any hotspots.

"At this stage, firefighters believe the cause of the fire is accidental."

The spokesperson also confirmed there had been some damage to the external stairs of the next property.

In a statement, Maldon Fire Station thanked residents and business owners who allowed crews to deal with the fire.

"We appreciate the disruption caused by closing access routes. However, it allows firefighters to ensure the area is safe, helps to protect neighbouring buildings - and also you, our community," the statement read.

The Fire Service has not confirmed the name or location of the business affected.
