A burst water main in The Street, Heybridge, left many homes without water earlier this morning (July 6).

UPDATE at 12 noon: A spokesperson for Essex & Suffolk Water said: "Following a burst, most customers are now back on supply."

Any customers still affected should have received a text with an approximate timescale for when their water supply will be restored.

UPDATE at 9.30am: Residents in Heybridge have had their water supply restored.

A representative for Essex & Suffolk Water told Nub News they were waiting for permission from Maldon District Council before they could close the road and begin work on the burst water main.

The believed cause is a "blowhole" in the main pipe, possibly caused by the weather or corrosion, as the pipes were laid in the mid-20th Century.

Workers are likely to close the road and put in two-way traffic lights. (Photo: Ben Shahrabi)

Heybridge School will be closed today, due to the incident.

A spokesperson said: "Children will have access to two live lessons this morning via Google Classroom. There will then be work set to complete in the afternoon.

"Lessons online will start at 9.30am. We will keep you updated with plans for tomorrow later today."
