The season continues at Maldon Film Club
Maldon Film Club's 17th season continued in October with the screening of the acclaimed Oscar-nominated For Sama followed by the BAFTA award-winning Bait.
The season continues on 2, 16 and 30 November when the films to be shown are the highly-rated The Truth, the Golden Globe winner, The Farewell and the Oscar-nominated Corpus Christi.
The club meets at Maldon Town Hall, doors open at around 7.30pm and the films commence at 8pm.
The Truth tells the story of Fabienne. Fabienne is a star; a star of French cinema. She reigns amongst men who love and admire her.
When she publishes her memoirs, her daughter Lumir returns from New York to Paris with her husband and young child.
The reunion between mother and daughter will quickly turn to confrontation and result in truths being told, accounts being settled and loves and resentments confessed.
Our second film, the Golden Globe winner The Farewell, tells what happens when Billi, a young headstrong Chinese-American woman living in New York City, discovers that her beloved and seemingly indestructible grandmother, Nai Nai, is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
To spare Nai Nai the agony, Billi's family decides to keep the unsuspecting lady in the dark and goes as far as organising an impromptu family wedding to keep suspicion at bay and allow the relatives to see Nai Nai for the last time.
For fear of not keeping her promise to maintain the lie, Billi's parents ask her to stay in the United States.
However, Billi needs to say good-bye. Can she reconcile the contradictions between the Western lifestyle and the Chinese cultural beliefs with her ideals? Only time will tell.
The last in the trio of films for November is the Oscar-nominated Corpus Christi, which is the story of 20-year-old Daniel who experiences a spiritual transformation in a Youth Detention Centre.
The crime he commits prevents him from applying to the seminary and after his release on parole he is sent to work at a carpenter's workshop.
However, Daniel has no intention of giving up his dream and dressed as a priest he decides to minister a small town parish.
Our film for December, Blinded by the Light, describes how an Asian teenager living in Luton, finds his voice through the music of Bruce Springsteen.
The programme for the 2021/22 season, which covers a wide variety of themes with films from different regions of the world, continues until 25 May 2022 - with films being shown fortnightly on Tuesdays in 2021 and Wednesdays in 2022.
