Town Mayor shares disappointment as Maldon Carnival is cancelled due to ‘lack of funding and volunteers’
This year's Maldon Carnival has been cancelled, as the committee was unable to secure enough volunteers or funding to hold the annual event.
The Town Mayor, Councillor Andrew Lay, told Nub News the traditional local event is "loved by many residents and visitors".
He said: "I share in the disappointment that the event organisers have not been able to get this off the ground this year.
"Hopefully, it will be back next year."
Last year, the event returned for the first time since the pandemic and raised £2,560 for local schools and the Mayor's chosen charities.
It reportedly costs £10,000 to hold the procession each year, but organisers say the challenge of raising enough funding "proved insurmountable"
In a statement, the Carnival's organising committee announced the cancellation "with heavy hearts and great disappointment".
A spokesperson said: "As an event that has brought joy, excitement, and vibrant celebration to our community for many years, this decision was not taken lightly."
"We understand the immense impact this news will have on our residents, local businesses, and participants who have eagerly awaited this festive occasion.
"We extend our sincere gratitude to all those who have lirelessly worked in previous years to make the carnival a resounding success."
Meanwhile, Carnival Chairman Rob Sleight has reportedly stepped down. He is set to be succeeded by former chaperone Carol Banks.
Updates to follow.
